about

Ever since I started seriously composing, I’ve loved working with the orchestra. And almost as soon as I really knew I wanted to be a composer, I knew I wanted to work in film (I can still remember the first time I saw Star Wars, sitting on the floor of my family room, hearing the soundtrack, and saying “that’s what I want to do”). Even in my earliest full orchestral pieces, my love of the cinematic orchestral sound has always been clear. Although my approach to that sound has changed over the years, unless I’m writing in a particular style or sound, I keep coming back to this.

Out of the four pieces written specifically for this recital (along with the opening toccata, and the two concertos), this is the oldest. From the very beginning, a single theme winds its way through the orchestra, constantly changing as it seems to mirror the course of a single day from sunrise to sunset.
