Pi, Op. 133

by David Lee Grossman

/

about

A piece for string orchestra based on the first 41 digits of pi. Each number in the sequence was assigned a particular pitch in the Dorian mode, and the harmonies are mostly quartal. Not my favorite composition or a style that I usually write, but it's written on a concept instead of a tonal language. If you don't like it because of that, listen to some of my other pieces before assuming this is all I do.

Finished 3/13/2015. Audio created with Finale 2012 and Garritan instruments (GPO 4)

(The background image is by Cristian Vasile. I am not claiming it as my own, nor am I claiming to be him. When I first saw it, I was amazed by how visually appealing it was, and it was the first thing I thought of when designing this cover after the obligatory symbol in the center.)
