Requiem in C Minor Mvt. 8 - In Paradisum

from Requiem in C Minor, Op. 123 by David Lee Grossman

/

about

The final movement, the In Paradisum, starts with a contrapuntal setting of the text for a cappella choir. Although two other movements of the Requiem have a cappella sections, this movement is unique in that the entirety of the text is sung completely unaccompanied. It isn't until the ending that the orchestra returns with the opening section from the first movement, followed by a restatement of the opening line of the Introit – Grant them eternal rest, O Lord.

lyrics

In paradisum deducant Angeli;
in tuo adventu suscipiant te martyres,
et perducant te in civitatem sanctam Ierusalem.

Chorus angelorum te suscipiat,
et cum Lazaro quondam paupere æternam habeas requiem.

Requiem aeternam dona eis, Domine, requiem.

Translation:
May the angels lead you into paradise;
may the martyrs receive you at your arrival
and lead you to the holy city Jerusalem.

May choirs of angels receive you and with Lazarus,
once a poor (man, may you have eternal rest.

Grant them eternal rest, O Lord
