Sonata in C-sharp Minor, I. Allegro

from The Senior Composition Recital of David Grossman by David Lee Grossman

/

about

After studying sonata form in Musicianship 3 my junior year, Dr. Phillips gave us an assignment – compose a short, ‘classical-sounding sonatina.’ Of course, I decided to write a full sonata form piece that quickly turned into a three movement sonata.

Since I was a young child, Beethoven has always been one of my favorite composers. Although I paid homage to Mozart in my first symphony, I wanted to look toward Beethoven for my first piano sonata (of course, starting to work on one of his sonatas in my piano lessons at the same time definitely influenced that, as well as the structure of the second movement).

This movement follows the traditional form for first movements. After a stately and powerful opening gesture, the movement immediately jumps into fast scales and arpeggios that test the pianist’s agility
