about

When I decided to write my first solo harp piece, I knew I wanted to write something that was lyrical and gentle, but flourishy at the same time. Several ideas were floating around my mind, but none of them felt like what I wanted. Around the same time, I was looking online for a childhood book (I don’t remember which one, or even what made me look it up), and as often happens to me, I eventually found myself looking up a completely different childhood book: Kenneth Grahame’s The Wind in the Willows.

Reading a summary of the book’s opening scene, as Mole emerges from his underground home and eventually ends up at a river that he has never seen before, and finding many illustrations online from different editions, the idea for this piece began to solidify.

Over a steady bass figure that feels like the gentle rocking of a boat on a calm stream, the piece opens with two harmonics. Like an echo of a distant call, they pull you in and lead to a long, folk-like melody that unfolds over a constant triplet pattern as the breeze winds its way between the low-hanging branches. Although this piece doesn’t depict the exact narrative of that opening scene, I wanted to capture the sensation of stillness and movement in the illustrations and the feeling of wonder and mystery in the book.
