Three Lullabies for Organ, I. Andante

from The Senior Composition Recital of David Grossman by David Lee Grossman

/

about

After hearing the works of late romantic and early 20th century French organists like Widor, Vierne, and Franck at many organ recitals, I wanted to try my hand at incorporating some of the common sounds I heard.

Each of the three lullabies presents a short idea, but each piece develops its idea in a different way. The first plays with where the melody is placed within the texture, first as the top voice, then travelling through the middle of the organ and into the pedals. The second maintains a fairly continuous harmonic progression while embellishing the shape of the melody above, with an occasional gesture echoed on the pedal. The third is almost the reverse of the second, and pulls the set into the early 20th century. Instead of a melody that varies length over simple harmonies, it maintains consistent four-measure phrases with a melodic idea that twists and turns through the complex harmonies below.
