Violin Concerto in A Minor, I. Allegro agitato

from The Senior Composition Recital of David Grossman by David Lee Grossman

/

about

Growing up, I listened to plenty of Vivaldi violin concertos, and when I decided to write a violin concerto of my own, that was the sound that immediately jumped into my head. Written for a standard chamber orchestra of the time (two violins, viola, and continuo like many of Vivaldi’s concertos), this piece begins with the first violin introducing a melody with the second violin and viola entering in turn, imitating the first violin. It then alternates between solo sections accompanied by cello and harpsichord and full orchestra sections where the theme is restated as the movement moves through several closely related keys.
