A Grand Overture, Op. 113

from Senior Recital by David Lee Grossman

/

about

As was mentioned earlier in the program notes for The Banner, the march is a staple of any wind or brass band’s repertoire. Just as common—and just as important—as the march, the overture is a central form when writing for these ensembles. This overture starts the same way many others do, with a fanfare that smoothly leads into the first statement of the main theme. In the overture’s roughly six minute length, that single main theme is developed multiple times, each time contrasting the surrounding ones and gradually growing more majestic and lyrical until the final time when the entire band comes together for a simpler yet still powerful ending.

As those of you who have received CDs of my music in the past may have noticed, there is an unintentional pattern in the ordering of the tracks. The music for each CD is ordered based on an imaginary program and how each piece flows into the next, but each CD always ends up with a piece like an overture as the final or penultimate track. With the exception of the first and last compositions on this recital, the ordering of these compositions was created in the same programmatic way, and an overture is the penultimate piece.
