Autumn Embers [Live]

from Senior Recital by David Lee Grossman

/

about

The text for this contemporary art song was written one day back in late September, when it was at least 20 degrees colder than any other day that week. They tell about the end of the warm days of summer and the approaching chill of winter, and the longing one has for the return of the warmth.

The next day, the melody emerged as I typed the poem into my computer. Like most of my vocal music, this piece incorporates elements of a quasi-contemporary ballad in a strophic form. Each verse describes a different sign of the changing seasons, both the visible and the emotional.

lyrics

Summer's warmth has gone away,
Winter's chill soon here to stay,
Days are shorter,
Nights are longer,
Autumn now is with us.

Greens are all of diff'rent hues,
Changing old familiar views.
Fires are lighting,
So inviting,
Embers all aflame!

Time's forever passing by,
Fleeting visions in the eye.
Thoughts of sadness,
Summer madness,
Are no longer here.

Faces of those dear to us,
Would they were still here with us.
Mem'ries of those times gone by,
When things were good, and life seemed fun.

Summer's warmth has gone away,
Winter's chill soon here to stay,
Days are shorter,
Nights are longer,
Autumn now is with us.

Time is never on our side,
Sorrows we can never hide.
But each season's onward passing,
Brings fresh hope anew!
