about
A setting of an anonymous 15th century English text based on 'Ave Maris Stella.' This piece, for choir, flute, and optional crotale, is dedicated to Dr. James Jordan and the 2015-2016 Westminster Schola Cantorum.
As a student at Westminster Choir College, I have the privilege to sing some of the top music in the choral repertoire. The centerpiece of the sophomore choir's fall concert this year was Stravinsky's Symphony of Psalms, and I was struck by how he played the simple against the complex in his search for heaven. In a similar manner to Stravinsky, this piece purposely juxtaposes the relatively simple, chant-like lines in the choir with the plaintive searching for understanding in the chromatic lines of the flute.
Finished 1/7/2016. Recorded April 24, 2016 in Bristol Chapel on the Westminster Choir College campus.
lyrics
Blessed Mary, mother viginal,
Perfect maiden, star of the sea,
Have rememb'ance on the final day
On thy poor servant praying to thee.
Mirror without spot, red rose of Jerico,
Close garden of grace, hope in despair,
When my soul the body part fro,
Succor it from my enemies' rage.
Blessed Mary, mother viginal,
Perfect maiden, star of the sea.
