Bossa Nova Baby, Op. 92 [Live]

from Senior Recital by David Lee Grossman

/

about

In jazz music, common forms include bebop, swing, and bossa nova. The bossa nova style, which evolved from the samba, was developed and popularized in the 1950s and 1960s. Characterized by a lyrical fusion of samba and jazz, the bossa nova usually deals with the ideas of love, longing, and youth – all factors that led to the title.

Last year, I wrote a jazz inspired classical piece for my combo to perform at last year’s jazz showcase. Since the end of that concert, I have had many people tell me that I should write one for the combo this year. Unlike last year’s piece, which was written out in its entirety, I started this one with the intent of writing a piece for the performers to improvise over. Also in contrast to last year’s piece is the style, a bossa nova instead of a quasi-blues.

This piece was first performed at the 2014 HMP jazz showcase with David Grossman and Maddy Parkes on piano, Brenna Kugan on flute, Mr. Ben Cahill on bass, and Mr. Jason Price on drums.
