about
The Crux Fidelis text comes from the sixth century Latin hymn Pange Lingua, written by St. Venantius Fortunatus. This polyphonic setting for a cappella choir is written in the style of a Renaissance motet.
Although they were not direct sources of inspiration, I was inspired to write this piece after singing Lassus's Justorum Anime in my freshman year and conducting several Palestrina motets in high school during my early conducting training.
Finished 4/3/2015. Recorded April 24, 2016 in Bristol Chapel on the Westminster Choir College campus.
lyrics
Crux fidelis, inter omnes arbor una nobilis,
nulla talem silva profert, flore, fronde, germine.
Dulce lignum, dulce clavo, dulce pondus sustinens.
Translation (by Edward Caswall, 1814-1878)
Faithful Cross, above all other, one and only noble Tree!
None in foliage, none in blossom, none in fruit thy peers may be.
Sweetest wood and sweetest iron, sweetest Weight is hung on thee.
