In Flanders Fields

from Choral by David Lee Grossman

/

about

A setting of the famous poem by Canadian poet John McCrae. The poem was written on May 3rd, 1915 after the poet presided over the funeral of a friend and fellow soldier, Alexis Helmer, who was killed in the Second Battle of Ypres. After its first publication, it quickly became one of the most popular and most quoted poems from the war, and it's reference to the poppies growing on graves resulted in the remembrance poppy becoming one of the most recognized symbols in the world for soldiers that have been killed in combat.

This setting is written for unaccompanied choir. The Juniata College Concert Choir (Dr. Russ Shelley, director) will premiere this piece as part of their 2017 Summer tour in Ireland.

Finished 7/24/2014. Audio created with Finale 2012 and Garritan instruments and mixed with Audacity.

lyrics

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.
