about
This traditional Irish blessing is probably one of the most well-known texts in the world of choral music – so many settings exist of it that I have actually heard it called a requirement for choral composers, much the same way that fugues are for baroque composers and sonatas or symphonies are for classical.
From the middle of second grade through sixth grade, I was homeschooled, and attended Princeton Friends School for seventh and eighth grade. Each year at graduation, the school chorus performs a setting of this blessing, with a still-prevalent but less common variation of the text – the same text that I use for this piece.
This piece will also be performed next Monday at the choir’s Spring Concert – Lift Ev’ry Voice.
lyrics
May the road rise to meet you,
May the wind be always at your back;
May the sun shine warm upon your face.
May the road rise to meet you,
May the wind be always at your back;
May the sun shine warm upon your face.
May the rains fall soft upon your fields,
And 'til we meet again;
May the sun shine warm upon your face,
Until we meet again.
May the road rise to meet you,
May the wind be always at your back;
May the sun shine warm upon your face.
And until we meet again, my friend,
May God hold you in the palm of His hand.
Amen.
