Sonatina for Orchestra, Op. 87

from Senior Recital by David Lee Grossman

/

about

Ever since I was born, I have always been listening to classical music, a very strong and easily heard influence in my own writing. In particular, some of the first classical music I listened to was written by composers like Mozart, Beethoven, and Bach.

This sonatina features many different techniques and sounds common in the later classical period: the instrumentation is typical of the time (with the exception of four timpani instead of two), the sonata form is one of the common and well-known forms of classical music, and the opening motif and lyrical, string heavy melodies have become characteristics of orchestral music in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. To me, it has the sound of Beethoven writing in the style of later Mozart or Haydn, sticking with their styles for most of the piece but occasionally slipping a bit of his own sound into the music.
